Hello! My name is Moira Rose Vane and I live in Edmonton, Alberta. I have worked as a lawyer for close to 21 years. Throughout that time I have pursued personal finance education as a passionate hobby. My parents came from humble backgrounds. My dad was a refugee who risked everything to pursue his dreams. My mom came from a rural farming background and had to leave the Maritimes in order to find work.
I attended Simon Fraser University for my undergrad degree in Criminology and the University of Alberta for my law degree. I did not have any family assistance for my post secondary and graduated with a hefty amount of debt. It took me 10 years to pay back my student loans.
My entire legal career has been in the public service so the big money of private practice has not been my reality. Teaching myself to invest, always paying myself first, and taking small risks has been how I’ve arrived to where I am.
Throughout my legal career I have always been ‘the money friend’ in my circles. I have always talked to pregnant or expecting colleagues about getting an RESP started quickly when their child was born, how to figure out if pension buy-backs are worth it, and how to rebuild after financial setbacks like divorce and widowhood.
In 2023 I lost my dad to terminal cancer. We were told he had 6 months to live and instead he died in 3 weeks. One of the most powerful moments I had with him in those last 3 weeks was when he told me he had no regrets. That no one should feel sorry for him because he had gotten everything out of life that he had ever dreamed. This affirmed a deeply held personal view that money is a tool to help you life your happiest life.
Fast forward to the beginning of 2024. While taking our dogs for a walk my friend Bridget Casey encouraged me to take the leap and start doing financial planning for more than just my friends. I met her during the 2019 provincial election when she would preach - with hard data to back up her sermons - that free universal daycare is the key to women’s economic freedom and security. Which just so happens to be one of my core beliefs!
So with her encouragement I have started my financial planning business, Moira Rose Financials Ltd (yes that’s my real name, IYKYK). While financial planners are not regulated in Alberta, I am currently undertaking the Qualified Associate Financial Planner designation with the FP Canada Institute in Ontario. To date I have completed the Financial Management, Insurance and Risk Management, Estate Planning and Law for Financial Planning, Tax Planning, Retirement Planning, and Investment Planning courses, and I have passed the Technical Educational Fundamentals exam.
Money is more than math, and women have multiple considerations in their lives besides just numbers on a screen. Together, I aspire to help you integrate your values into your finances. I hope I can help women feel confident in managing and organizing their finances and building the life they want to live.
